Biophilic design is indeed one of the most valuable interior design trends nowadays. It focuses on creating a calming space with a visual connection with nature while improving wellbeing, health and productivity. Passionate about living in a “not only healthy yet also beautiful environment”? With these 5 simple steps, you can perfectly pull off Biophilic Interior Design in your home!
1. Draw the outside in with plants
Plants, the first and most important element you must have to create a biophilic interior. When you incorporate biophilic designs using indoor plants, it enhances the multi-sensory experience and stimulates visual connection. You’ll not only beautify the interior but feel closer to nature.
There are a lot of indoor plant types to improve your air quality, and improve your mood as well with its beauty. You can simply start with a few pots in the corner of your living room, put hanging plants, or any other green alternatives you’d like to decorate your room with.
You can also add more greens with nature patterned wallpapers!
2. Use natural color scheme
You can use a variety of colors to create a natural color scheme. Earthy shades and greens are just a few of the options available to you. If you want to create a room that evokes the feeling of a calm beach, start with shades of beige and blue. Or, consider the colors of the sky, which range from blue to pink and grey. Warmer colors like the tones of the desert are also great options.
While adding colors to your room, for example your wallpaper, be sure to choose responsibly made items and eco-friendly materials above all else. 3. Bring natural light and airflow in
Biophilic design must enhance air quality, airflow, circadian rhythm, heart rate and ordinary human health, creating a more productive and healthy built environment for the people inside.
Oliver Heath, from Oliver Heath Design, has recently launched an online course entitled Biophilic Design in the Home, and says: ‘a “photon shower” (an intense burst of natural light taken each day) will help improve sleep at night and boost alertness during the day. Start by clearing obstructions from windows, be that plants outside, cleaning dirt from the glass but also pulling back curtains and drapes to let the light flood in.’
To improve your lighting, we suggest you use light-colored wallpaper for a better ambience.
4. Enhance it with natural shapes
If you’ve ever wondered why rounded shapes or certain patterns are so pleasing as part of home decor, the likely explanation is that they come from nature.
Zelda Elisco, Sustainable Designer from Abigail-Elise Design Studio , says: ‘Curves in our built environment or furniture evoke a positive human reaction because of its resemblance to the natural shapes found in nature.’ She further explains that such design choices ‘boost the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, decrease stress levels, and encourage a sense of well-being.’
And not only your furniture, but you can also incorporate this by using natural-shaped patterns on your wallpaper, like our tropical wallpaper collection!
5. Complete it with the textures of nature
By investing in decor and furniture that imitate natural materials, you can easily feel more in tune with nature. You can try it with our beautiful collection of marble wallpapers.
